LimeWire Ordered to Close by Court

Peer-to-peer filesharing service LimeWire has been ordered to shut down after losing a four-year legal fight with US record labels.

The ruling follows a long-running legal dispute with the Recording Industry Association of America, which represents the major record labels and accused Lime Wire, the company behind the LimeWire service, of infringing copyright.

On May 12, 2010, Judge Kimba M. Wood of the United States District Court ruled that LimeWire and its creator, Mark Gorton, had committed copyright infringement, engaged in unfair competition, and induced others to commit copyright infringement. On October 26, 2010, LimeWire was ordered to disable the "searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality" after losing a court battle with the RIAA over claims of copyright infringement.

World of Warcraft Authenticator Hacked

Reports indicate that a WoW (World of Warcraft) trojan is spreading that intercepts the authentication code generated by the Blizzard Authenticator system, So keep your eyes on the look out.

What is the Battle.net Authenticator?

The Battle.net Authenticator is an optional tool that offers World of Warcraft players an additional layer of security to help prevent unauthorized account access. The Authenticator itself is a physical "token" device that fits easily on a keyring.

After looking into this, it has been escalated, but it is a Man in the Middle attack.

This is still perpetrated by key loggers, and no method is always 100% secure.

Basically, what the virus does is fairly simple after you're infected:

  • The next time you log in World of Warcraft, the game asks for your Authenticator code.
  • The virus intercepts it, send it to another server, and sends a wrong one to Blizzard - You get an error.
  • The people behind the virus now have a few seconds/minutes to use the "real" code while it's valid to change your password / empty your account / guild bank.

Verizon Has Blocked Access to 4Chan

According to 4chan's Twitter account and status update blog, they have been "explicitly blocked" by the Verizon wireless network. Last year AT&T blocked access to 4chan for about a day, due to a DDoS attack against the site. I'd love to see how Verizon manages to avoid the inevitable shitstorm headed their way.

For those unfamiliar with 4chan, it launched in 2003 as an “imageboard”, a site based around the sole purpose of posting images.  The 4chan site rose to notoriety due to its lack of a registration system, meaning that anyone could post to the site anonymously.  Over the years it has rose to prominence due to its ability to start Internet memes such as “Rickrolling” and the LOLcats.

The loose knit group has also gained some fame by spinning off a group known as “Anonymous” that has taken issue with the Church of Scientology and launched both online and real world protests of the controversial religious group.
